I thought about doing a Christmas episode but just wasn’t really feeling the spirit, so I went with an episode full of my favorite songs from my favorite records this year. All of these are from my year end Drone, Metal, and Not Drone Or Metal lists. No episode next week because the university is closed, so I’ll see you in 2018.

Got a sermon by Curtis Watson alongside a totally bizarre 1980s Japanese record repressed by Important right in the beginning. I’d be lying if I said it got better from there but the rest of the show is pretty great too, especially the super mysterious Most Important Event Of The Year.

I feel like I missed a lot of drone records this year, especially after seeing other people’s lists. Like, there’s 4 records on A Closer Listen’s Top Ten Drone list that I haven’t heard yet. Oh well. Can’t listen to everything.

I’m especially happy with this list because not only does it have a lot of artists I’ve never heard of/written about before (15, 10, 4, 3) but also it has a lot of artists who I already love that are at the top of their game right now (14, 13, 7, 1). As usual, I tried to stay away from the high profile droners (yes, Lawrence English’s Cruel Optimism and Bibio’s Phantom Brickworks are phenomenal) and I do my best to let you know about my less-obvious favorites.

In case you missed em, you should check out my other lists: Metal and Not Drone Or Metal. There’s plenty of droney shit on the Not Drone Or Metal list, too, so you’ll definitely want to go there. The #1 on that list is an All Time Top 10er that I doubt will ever get unseated.

Here’s the Spotify playlist for those of you who like that sort of thing. It’s missing numbers 10, 8, 6, and 4, so stream those below.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

While I was pulling records the night before this show, I realized I somehow had never played any of the 3 Hitler records I have, so naturally I grabbed one. Spun one of his speeches (almost 76 years ago to the day) alongside Messages’ modern raga drone and Jute Gyte’s new droney black metal picture disc. Also, don’t miss the old radio horror story from 1949 underneath the new Turner/Menche collaboration.

Air date: December 6, 2017

Background music: Alessandro Cortini – Iniziare (from Avanti)

00:00:00 Mississippi John Hurt – Monday Morning Blues (from The Best Of Mississippi John Hurt)

00:08:37 Menace Ruine – Primal Waters Bed (from Union Of Irreconcilables)
00:24:08 Abdullah Kershi & Ahmed Sherif – Raqaat (from The Freedom Songs Of The Somali Republic)
00:28:50 Talk break
00:31:32 Aaron Turner & Daniel Menche – Side B (from Nox)
01:33:00 Inner Sanctum – The Vengeful Corpse (excerpt) (from The Vengeful Corpse / Hanson’s Ghost)
01:47:09 Geoff Mullen – Part 2 (excerpt) (from Filtered Water)
01:00:19 Talk break
01:03:30 Jenks Miller – Hats Off To (Roy) Montgomery (from Roads To Ruin)
01:12:14 Au Champ Des Morts – Dans La Joie (from Dans La Joie)
01:22:16 William Harris – Electric Chair Blues (from Delta Blues Heavy Hitters 1927-1931)
01:25:16 Popul Vuh – In Der Halle Des Lernen (from Die Nacht Der Seele – Tantric Songs)
01:29:14 Talk break
01:33:19 Messages – Magaraga (from Mirage)
01:34:34 Adolf Hitler – Address To The Reichstag (German Parliament) December 11, 1941 (excerpt) (from Hitler Is On The Air! A Study In Audible Evil)
01:53:49 Jute Gyte – The Sparrow (from The Sparrow)
01:59:36 Talk break
02:01:55 Yonekawa Toshiko – Sakura Sakura (from The World Of Sō(Koto))

I tried my best to keep this list to a round number, like an increment of 5, but I just couldn’t help it. There are 16 records that I needed to tell you about and I couldn’t cut a single one from the list.

There’s way more doom/sludge than I expected, and while I tried to branch out from the big labels, I couldn’t help it too much, so save for the couple self released ones, there’s not a lot of surprises on here. Doesn’t matter, though. IT’S ALL AWESOME.

Since the previous list (Top 10 (Not Drone Or Metal) Records) didn’t have embedded streams, I made a Spotify playlist due to popular demand. But when I went to make a playlist for this list, it was missing numbers 16, 12, 10, 4, & 3, because Spotify sucks and that was too many. So while I still made the playlist, I also embedded a streaming song for everything on this list. I also went back and did the same for the previous list.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

Check out that new Aquarelle record. A+ stuff. I found a bunch of records over Thanksgiving weekend, including another Malcolm X record, field recordings from India, and Kimio Eto’s koto work. Was only able to get to one from the new Important records batch, but that just means the other two will make an appearance next week.

Air date: November 29, 2017

01:07:53 My Disco – Rivers (from Little Joy)
01:17:38 Kimio Eto – Kensetsu No Hibiki (The Sound Of Construction And Progress) (from Koto Master)

01:58:17 Angel Sanabria & Pablo Vicente Morel – Subo (from Los Chiriguanos Of Paraguay: Guaraní Songs & Dances)
02:01:21 Talk break
02:03:56 Lightnin’ Hopkins – In The Evening, The Sun Is Going Down (from Autobiography In Blues)

Here’s the first of three lists. In case you couldn’t tell by the title, the other two lists will be a drone list and a metal list. This one has records that don’t fit in either of those lists. However, I could’ve argued for maybe half of these showing up on the drone list, but I tried not to get too loosey goosey with my definition of drone.

There’s a ton of debuts here (6 to be exact) which is really exciting. Here’s hoping they continue their genius. The reviews/descriptions are pretty short on these and will be the same on the other lists because I just don’t have enough time to write 30+ full reviews. Imagine they’re just taglines or something.

Instead of uploading a song to stream for every record, I made a playlist on Spotify. I’m not crazy about Spotify for a lot of reasons, but in this context, it falls short because two of the artists on this list aren’t on Spotify (numbers 9 and 4), so you’ll just have to seek those out for yourself.

Update: I added song streams for everything below because I ended up doing it for the metal list and felt weird if I didn’t do it for all the lists.

As always: Thanks for reading. Thanks for listening. Thanks for making incredible music.

Back from a couple weeks off, sorry. That just means lots of new shit this time, though. Tossed in a few techno-leaning jams this time.

Due to its power, I try not to wield the seashells record often, so this is the first time I’ve busted it out for A Thick Mist. In case you need to hear the whole thing, I ripped it a while ago, which you can download here.

Also, if you only buy one drone record in the next few months, definitely make it Olli Aarni’s Nielu.

Kelly Lee Owens is probably techno record of the year. Upper Wilds is probably rock record of the year. The Bulgarian folk mixed with Nancarrow’s player piano work is so much better than I expected it to be. Also, check out the Discogs page for that Bulgarian record because I played 8 songs, each with a slew of musicians involved, so if you want to know who/what/etc, Discogs does a better job at conveying that info than I could here.

I’m back! Sorry about the past 2 weeks. Technical difficulties at the station made doing a vinyl show impossible. But that just means I have a backlog of excellent records to spin and I packed this episode tight with quality sounds. I’m especially fond of the Xela into GY!BE with Vietnam War recordings sprinkled in. And the new Rafael Anton Irisarri featuring Siavash Amini has me in heaven.

Also, the talk breaks might seem strangely timed but it’s because I started the show at 6:45 instead of 7. I had to run to a meeting right after 9:00 so I couldn’t push the show until then but I still wanted the full 2 hours, so here we are.

I got to play one of my all-time favorite songs (“Nine Brothers & The Wolf”) and what might very well be the metal record of the year (As We Cup Our Hands…). Good times all around. Still down to one turntable and I’m not sure when the other will get fixed, but I seem to be managing.

This was a total mess of a show. I forgot my headphones. One of the turntables wasn’t working, which I used twice before noticing. The batteries on one of my Korgs died. Made it through mostly unscathed, though, with some surprisingly excellent moments, like the Deceh/Huxley section and basically the entire closing half hour.
