migration fest poster

I’m headed to Migration Fest in a few weeks. I can’t fly, and I live in Salem, Massachusetts, so getting to Olympia, Washington is gonna take quite a few days, but it will be so unbelievably worth it. I mean, just look at the bands that are playing (except Emperor, they’re definitely not playing, but False is doing an Emperor cover set). This is literally like 75% of my favorite metal bands. Bell Witch! Panopticon!! Hell!!! Mizmor!!!! Mournful Congregation!!!!! Un-fucking-real.

There’s still some day passes left (Friday is sold out) but people who bought a weekend pass and can’t go are selling their passes on the Facebook event page, so it’s still not too late to get in on this.

See you there?

UPDATE: I totally fucked up and played a song from a different Eos band than the one that played the fest. I played the Canadian black metal Eos on Fallen Empire instead of the Olympian doom Ēōs with three self-released demos. Sorry about that!

holy circle

What started out as a married duo with Erica Burgner-Hannum (of Unlucky Atlas and vocalist on many Locrian songs) and Terence Hannum (core member of Locrian, has a number of solo records, creates 2D art with cassette tape, and as of a few weeks ago became a published author) but has now expanded to trio status to include Nathan Jurgenson (Silo Halo, Teething Veils, Washerwoman). These guys make a wonderfully lush & dreamy gloompop (gloomy dreampop?) and have a new tape coming out in July on Accidental Guest Recordings as well as recently released 7″ square lathe, super limited to 30 copies (only 7 left), on Terence’s Anathemata Editions.

I was able to get ahold of Erica & Terence to take part in my Q&A series. I’m very thankful for their participation and their responses are exceptional. You might notice a slight variation on the standard set of questions. I decided to reword one and replace another. Always changing. Always improving.

What is an ideal death?
Erica: Dying in my sleep after a long life.

Terence: Being cryogenically frozen so I can be revived centuries later.

What makes you happy?
Erica: Spending time with my kids and writing music.

Terence: Being with my family, making stuff in my studio be it visual art, music or writing.

How can you die happy?
Erica: Avoid negative people and negative situations and take some risks. Try not to always play it safe.

Terence: Knowing my kids are kind and compassionate and to know that something I made meant something to someone.

How close have you come to death?
Erica: I was in very bad car accident as a sophomore in college. Somehow, I walked away unharmed but my car was totaled.

Terence: I don’t recall any of this but when I was an infant I had a disease that was killing babies and the elderly with extreme dehydration and I supposedly barely made it.

How can you make your life better?
Erica: Let go of things that are doing harm to you, physically and emotionally. Take some risks every once in a while.

Terence: Be more organized. Seriously.

What does kindness mean to you?
Erica: Having empathy, being supportive, generosity.

Terence: Listening, I have a hard time listening because my head is always going but to me the kindest thing you can do is listen.

Where do you find love?
Erica: Terence is my soulmate, if such a thing exists. During a break-up early in our relationship, I quickly realized that I couldn’t imagine my future without him. Then I got to a place where I was content with myself and just wanted him to be happy. Shortly after, we got back together. That’s true love. I can’t live without you but if I have to I want your happiness.

Terence: With Erica and our kids. With old friends.

When were you most afraid?
Erica: I was told repeatedly that I would loose my pregnancy with my daughter. I didn’t sleep well while pregnant with her because of that.

Terence: Having kids, not just like when they were born, but almost daily.

How do you listen to music?
Erica: In the car on the commute to work or records and Bluetooth at home. We also stream a lot of music on YouTube because we really like the music videos.

Terence: At home a lot of LPs and on Bandcamp and YouTube. I listen mainly to cassettes in my car.

beneath the remains

AGB is venturing into new territory here you guys. Well, sort of, or maybe getting back to my roots depending on how far back you look into AGB’s history. This giveaway is for a copy of Terence Hannum’s debut novella, Beneath The Remains. You should all know Hannum already: his solo music is unfuckwithable and he’s a member of the legendary Locrian as well as The Holy Circle. He’s also an incredible visual artist who works primarily with cassette tape as a 2D medium. For real this guy is like #1 jack of all trades, master of all of them.

I just finished reading this book last week. I have, like, negative time for reading, but this was good enough (and short enough, roughly 75 pages) that I blasted through it in just a few days. It’s so fucking can you buy cialis online good. The short synopsis is two young brothers are forced to move to Florida with their mom and new step-dad. The older brother, who hates almost everything except death metal and literature, goes missing. This is teeming with 80s/90s youth culture living alongside the depths of human malice and strangeness. I loved it and I’m pretty sure you will too.

The book is published by Hannum’s newly minted Anathemata Editions and the winner will receive a PDF of the book as well as a physical copy. All of you have to do is write a haiku about your childhood, Florida, death metal, evil, Shakespeare, or whatever, and send it to beneaththehaiku [at] antigravitybunny [dot] com by the end of the week (Friday, June 10th).

Jon Mueller - Tongues

Jon Mueller’s music is un-fucking-real. Most recently, he headed up the Death Blues project, which celebrated Life and the present. He’s worked with all your favorites (James Plotkin, Asmus Tietchens, Z’ev, Duane Pitre, Rhys Chatham…) and was/is in Volcano Choir, Collections Of Colonies Of Bees, and Pele. And he’s just the coolest fucking drummer. His newest self-released record (well, released by Rhythmplex) takes his hypno-drumming to the next level, with 2 side-long pieces of ritualistic Truth seeking transcendence that combines densely layered droning vocal chants and relentless percussion, music that can’t possibly be contained by time or place, let alone genre, it’s the sound of everyone you’ve ever met gathering together in an attempt to understand their existence.

So, this is another haiku contest. You write a haiku inspired by the record, drumming, speaking in tongues, truth, transcendence, life, etc, and you send it to drummingintongues |at| antigravitybunny |dot| com by the end of the weekend (Sunday, May 22). The winning haiku will be revealed next week.

Watch a video here, buy it here, and catch up on Mueller’s back catalog here.
