Lots of long stuff this episode and a little more dark & heavy tunes than usual. I forgot how that Vangelis song starts out (which is like kinda funky super 70s soundtrack stuff) so it’s hilarious when Tolkien starts reading from The Hobbit, it sounds like a clown show until the music switches gears a few minutes in. Also, the artist and album names for the Orthodox chants may be completely off. I have no idea. If you know, please clue me in.

Got a show chock full of new droney noisy experimental shit including all 3 of the new Important releases, one of the new Deathprod reissues (GET ON THAT), and the debut from Thalassa (William Fowler Collins & Aaron Turner’s new project). Also got some sludgey Swamp Witch on 45 slowed down to 33, Steve Allen talking about home computers in 1983, the resurrection of Part Chimp, and Peruvian folk played on top of Charlemagne Palestine.

The recording equipment started recording in WAV (even though it was set to MP3) so I had to stop the recording because I didn’t have enough room to save a 2 hour long WAV. That’s why the first song by Doc Evans doesn’t show up in the recording. Sorry!

I apologize for this recording being a total mess. New equipment was installed for recording the broadcasts and this was my first time using it. There were two main problems. 1: It recorded a WAV file instead of MP3 and I didn’t have enough disk space to record the whole episode. This is easily fixable in the future but this show got cut off at about 80 minutes in. I included the playlist for the rest of the episode without timestamps below because why not. 2: The new equipment has more settings which I’ll need to mess with because this recording got clipped even though the live output wasn’t clipping. Not sure why that happened, so I can’t guarantee the next episode will sound perfect (it might even sound worse) but I’ll figure things out eventually. Also, I brought along a 10″ haftarah record that I didn’t realize was a 78 so that was pretty disappointing.

On the bright side, the half-hour stretch starting with The North Sea is especially excellent in my opinion, so you have that to look forward to.

I started the show off with a record that’s had a huge influence on me, especially in how I curate A Thick Mist, it’s a sound collage full of religious weirdness, death, obscured field recordings, and strange electronics. Very psyched to finally own a vinyl copy of that. But more importantly, I fucking love Joseph Spence so much, that dude’s music is pure unbridled joy.

Got lots of cool mixing going on in this episode, I’m especially into Ghosh’s flute raag underneath Robert Chaney talking about the supernatural, and I put that Ariel Guzik record on, without ever hearing it, alongside “In Heaven” from Eraserhead and it worked so well I think David Lynch himself would approve.

Wish that Edward Teller record didn’t sound like total ass. I’ll have to give it a good cleaning sometime. At least the Khan/Basinski mix sounded fantastic and I can’t wait to play the B side of The Hooked Generation where Dr. Impe talks about what’s wrong with sex, cursing, and horror themes in movies, what’s wrong with rock music, and if there’s proof that Communism had a part in the development of folk and rock music to destroy the morals of the Western World. The A side (the side that I played alongside Sunn O))) & Boris) talked about how the Bible mentions drugs and if drug users go to heaven.

Music by black Americans (as far as I know). Not much in the way of spoken word stuff aside from Malcolm X’s speeches. Also: very little experimental music. The only artist in my vinyl collection who I knew wasn’t a white dude was Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe, which was really disheartening to realize. Still covered a lot more ground than I typically do, with funk, jazz, electric Chicago blues, and vaudeville blues in addition to the usual country blues and gospel.

A couple of mistakes I feel the need to note: I gave the wrong name of the artist for “Time Is On Our Side” and thought Revelation Funk was part of the song title instead of one of the artists involved, and I said the boys from Street And Gangland Rhythms were homeless but they actually lived in public housing.

And apparently today is Bessie Jones‘ birthday (2/8/1902-7/17/1984). Alan Lomax called her “the Mother Courage of American Black traditions.” Happy birthday, Bessie. Thanks for your amazing music.
